installing xsane

Anyone have any experience installing xsane?

I got the following error trying to run through ./configure
'checking for sane/sane.h... no'
which caused configure to stop.

I've checked, and sane.h does infact live in:
/usr/local/include/sane/sane.h, which is where ./configure expects it to
be.

I installed sane from source, and I've verified that it works correctly
(xscanimage works). Here's the sane-config options that sane reports:
sane-config --version : 1.0.1
sane-config --ldflags : -L/usr/local/lib
sane-config --libs : -lsane -ldl -lnsl -ljpeg -lm
sane-config --cflags : -I/usr/local/include
sane-config --prefix : /usr/local

I'm using GCC vesion 2.95.2, which I also built from source

Any help is appreciated...
If all fails, I'm even willing to hack ./configure so that it'll find it
or ignore that error or something...
