build difficulties with speakfreely

Hi, I can't figure out what do to here. I am trying to install Speak Freely,
and I have done it before and it installed. I discovered I needed to specify
another option in the Makefile, and now when I try and build it I get this
error. What should I do? Thanks for any help!

make install
(lots of build stuff, then the following error)

format not recognized /usr/bin/install: strip failed
