File Sharing with/for Macintosh

Can either (or both) Linux and BSD share file directories with Macintosh?
I've been trying to get "Fiel Sharing for Macintosh" to work with NT
SErver but am having problems with it. I'd like to investigate the use
of Linux or BSD as a  file server on a small network where there are macs,
and NT & win98 (using fat16 partitions for sharing). 

Any advice/links would be much appreciated! Thanks.
