I find that I minimize those compromises and get the best of both worlds
by running XDarwin, powered by Enlightenment, in my OS X session; by
ditching the more-form-than-function Mac mouse in favor of a Logitech USB
trackball (which works out of the box with no hassle); and by tunneling my
X apps from a Linux host that mounts the same home directory. Windows
controlled by Enlightenment respect a wider variety of mouse inputs than
do Aqua windows, I get back my multiple desktops, and I can run any
application I need, while running heavy stuff on the faster Linux host to
avoid challenging the Apple processor. That's about as flexible and
powerful a desktop as one could ask for!

For those who want tighter integration with Aqua, try the spiffy OroborOSX
(http://oroborosx.sourceforge.net/).

Cheers ... -d
