cd recording

Is there no help for the widow's son? I've never used a CD burner in
Linux. I've got kernel 2.4.18 and here's the IDE drive I've got:

$ dmesg | grep -i cd
hdc: Memorex 48MAXX 2448AJ, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 48X CD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33)
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12

The HOWTO on linuxdoc.org is for kernel 2.2. I would guess it's different
by now (for example, I don't have a module called "iso9660" in my kernel
source). Can someone give me a quick and dirty? I've got 'cdrecord'
installed and I know how to use that, I just don't understand how the SCSI
emulation is set up.  Thanks!
