booting dual processors:

I once had a bad experience with two specific CPUs. I first tried
installing them in a box that was going to be Win2k (not for me), and I
got blue screens during the install. I learned that Win2k can barf if
you're trying to use CPUs with different stepping, even though they might
be the same speed. Of course I cursed MS and used two other procs.
Later I tried putting those two procs into a Linux box and, hmmm, the
kernel would panic whenever it tried initializing the processors. Each
would work individually, and the non-SMP kernel would boot with both CPUs
in place. I assumed that it was either still a stepping issue (even
though the Linux kernel isn't supposed to have any huge ones) or maybe an
issue with the motherboard I was trying to use (same model on both
occasions). I still have the two mystery processors that just won't play
nice together.

So there you go. Check the model/stepping on your processors. If they
match or they're really really close, maybe try another motherboard. If
that's too extreme, maybe first try booting each individually to make sure
they're functional.
