Standardizing the install-fest

One thing that RedHat does now is quite a useful feature for the newbie, 
or for anyone actually.  The rhn-applet that is installed by default 
provides a visual cue when you have packages that need to be updated. 
 It's especially nice in those time periods (like during the last week 
or two) when a number of bugs or exploits come out every few days - if 
you're not subscribed to linux at u or one of the SANS newsletters you 
might not be aware of it.

Do other distros have something similar?
