I haven't yet had time to really mess with it since the initial round of
suggestions, outside of trying several that did not work.  I have a few
more suggestions queued up and hope to get to it again this weekend
sometime.

Perhaps worth noting, my original need for a new kernel was to allow me to
put my wireless card into monitor mode.  One suggestion I received was
that there is someone out there who distributes a rh9 kernel rpm with this
built into it.  I want to do other things with the kernel so I think I'm
going to keep trying, but someone else might find that tip useful.

I'll let you know when I do get it figured out,
