One thing to watch out for:  all linux really cares about is the chipset
used, not the manufacturer.  And the various manufacturers switch
from one chipset to another without necessarily changing the 
parts number for the card in any obvious place.  For what it's worth,
I've had good luck with almost all firewire cards I've tried; the one
complete failure was an Adaptec.  So much for brand reliability.
