IIRC, the effort to port FreeBSD to PPC has stalled and it isn't bootable. OpenBSD and NetBSD 
release for PPC and should be mostly identical to [Open | Net]BSD  on i386. I haven't used them 
though, so I can't speak from experience, or say how good the hardware support is.
