[linux] Damaged bzip'd tar files

I recently backed up a lot of data using tar and bzip2. Now that I am
trying to restore the data I am getting errors in almost all of the tar
files. bzip2recover is splitting up the bzip'd file into chunks, which
is useless since they have to be re-combined for tar, which still dies
at the same point in the archive...

Is there any way to retrieve this data? Since its happened on almost
a dozen files I'm wondering if there might even be some sort of
incompatible bzip versions? I did the backups on RH9 and restore on FC2...

The files were created with the following command:
tar -cjvf foo.tbz2 vital_stuff/

Thanks,
Robert
