Pine + SSH to attu + Suse + dialup through UW networks + konsole + bash 
+ xterm-color = Just fine, no complaints anywhere.  Now maybe if I was 
to put xterm-color in my ./bashrc over on attu it would blow up, but I 
don't think that is what you're talking about.
