The conversion from .jpg to .png is nice in concept, but since you're
dealing with more than one compression system, you'll have to sacrifice
either quality or storage size. Have you tried converting to an
uncompressed format (such as .tiff), then converting back to .jpg? I
don't believe that your pictures are going to end up looking as nice as
they did before since no matter what you do, you're going to compress
them at least one more time. Minimizing the number of times you have to
compress the photos will probably serve you best.
