Greetings, LLC-LIST community--

I'd like to talk to you today about TECHNOLOGY and MONEY! Usually, a
conversation like this is about how there isn't enough money to get the
technology we want and need. But THIS conversation is about a
record-breaking amount of $6 MILLION that is available this year to spend
on technology.

A brief bit about the Student Technology Fee (STF): The STF, as directed
by statute, is to be spent only on technology for students. At the LLC, we
have secured substantial STF money in past years to provide new lab
facilities and software to better enable students to learn foreign
languages. In fact, next quarter we'll be debuting a new digital audio
listening lab and a powerful e-classroom that we procured with an award
from last year's STF fund.

The MOST important thing you should know about the STF is that any of you
can initiate a proposal.

Here is a website to help you start thinking:
http://depts.washington.edu/techfee/proposals.htm

The deadline for submitting a proposal is January 22, 2002!

As you review the STF website, you may think of ways your department
and/or the LLC could provide important technology for students. Please
feel free to contact us (llc at u.washington.edu) with your thoughts!

Thank you,
Lesley Carmichael
