Are you a strong writer who enjoys helping others? If so, come work as
a tutor for the English Department Writing Center! We are actively
recruiting non-English majors to broaden the diversity and knowledge
base of our center, which serves UW writers in all disciplines. You'll
benefit from the experience as well: the skills you acquire through this
work will serve you throughout your academic and professional careers as
you acquire the language and methods for communicating about writing,
form, and meaning with writers of varied backgrounds.

Required training for EWC tutors consists of English 474, Writing Center
Theory and Practice. This 5-credit course (MW 2:30-4:20) offers
students the opportunity both to read and write about various approaches
to tutoring, as well as to practice tutoring through conferencing and
observation. By November, students are ready to bring this knowledge
into the Writing Center for hands-on experience with a starting hourly
wage of $8.00 (more for work study students).

This is a great opportunity for students to work in a relaxed, fun
learning environment while also gaining valuable experience that will
look great on resumes and/or graduate school applications. If you are
interested, please contact Louisa Peck at 685-2876 or
peckl at u.washington.edu <mailto:peckl at u.washington.edu>. Also, feel
free to stop by the EWC in Padelford B-12 and talk to any of the tutors
about their experience.
