Dear Students:
I am writing to tell you about the Students in Service program offered
through the Carlson Leadership & Public Service Center and the Washington
State Campus Compact. Students in Service is a part-time AmeriCorps
program designed to meet critical community needs by engaging higher
education students in service, and fostering within them an ethic of civic
responsibility.
Through Students in Service, students who are engaged in local, regional
and national community service and service learning opportunities have the
opportunity to enroll as a part time AmeriCorps member and to earn an
educational award at the end of their term of service. The number of
service hours completed determines the amount of this award. Students who
are engaged in volunteer work in the community, and expect to complete
either 300 hours or 450 hours of work over the course of the next year, or
900 hours over the next two years, are eligible to enroll in the program.
This is a wonderful way for students to become involved in their
communities and to learn about the endless possibilities that come with
engaging in service. The Carlson Center hosts 2-3 in person orientations
each week. Interested students can contact inserve at u.washington.edu for
more information. A schedule of orientation sessions can be viewed at
http://depts.washington.edu/leader/11_SIS/orientation_times.htm.
Students are encouraged to visit www.studentsinservice.org to learn more
about the program. Before attending the University of Washington
orientation, students are required to complete an on-line orientation at
this site.
