Science at the Movies is a free film and lecture series hosted by the
University of Washington Department of Chemistry. Our goal is to
introduce and enlighten the public about the science occurring at the
University of Washington.. Our next event is scheduled for Tuesday,
October 24, 2006, at 6:30 pm in
<http://www.washington.edu/home/maps/?BAG>Bagley Hall Room 131.
Professor James Pfeiffer from the UW School of Public Health and
Community Medicine will present a talk entitled "Bringing AIDS
Treatment to Africa: Successes and Challenges" in conjunction with a
showing of portions of the documentary "A Closer Walk" and "Sophia's
Story". This event is co-sponsored by the Global Health Resource
Center; International Health Program, School of Public Health and
Community Medicine; UW Libraries; Health Alliance International and
the Department of Chemistry.
A "Closer Walk" is the first film to depict humankind's confrontation
with the global AIDS epidemic. The documentary includes a portrait of
Dr. Paul Farmer's work in Haiti. UW students will be familiar with
Dr. Farmer's work as part of the UW Common Book: "Mountains beyond
Mountains". "Sophia's Story" follows the life of a young woman in
Mozambique as well as the work of the local organization, Health
Alliance International and the Mozambican Health Ministry.
