Careers for Math Majors
When: Monday, January 26, 3:30 pm - 4:50 pm

What can you do with a Math degree? This session includes UW Math alumnae
who are doing really interesting things with their careers.
Panelists:
Eric Valpey, '07
Actuarial Analyst , Premera Blue Cross
Eric Valpey is a Health Insurance Actuarial Analyst working for Premera
Blue Cross on their Health Care Economics Actuarial Team. His team
provides analytical support for the contracting of Hospitals and Health
Care Providers in Washington, Alaska, Oregon, and Arizona. Eric has a
Bachelor of Science from the University of Washington's Department of
Mathematics, Class of 2007.
Hsu Ken Ooi, '06
Co-Founder, Eggsprout
Hsu Ken is a co-founder of Eggsprout where he is responsible for the brand
and user experience of the site. Prior to Eggsprout, Hsu Ken was a Senior
Web Analyst at ZAAZ, an interactive agency, where he advised clients such
as Converse, Nike and Sony on improving the performance and monetization
of their web channel. Hsu Ken graduated from the University of Washington
with a double major in Mathematics and Statistics.
Ian Elliott, '04
Actuarial Associate, Symetra
Ian Elliott, graduated from the UW with a BA in math in 2004. He started
his career path as an actuary by doing an internship at Safeco (now
Symetra Financial) in the summer of '03. He was then hired at Symetra as
actuarial analyst in '05, and has worked there since. He recently moved
from the finance department to the annuity department and is now actuarial
associate.

Pathways in Technology - Career Panel and Networking
When: Tuesday, January 27, 4:30 pm - 6:20 pm (4:30-5:30 in MEB 238;
then informal networking 5:30-6;30 in tthe CSE Atrium)
Come hear from five recent graduates of Applied and Computational Math
Sciences, Computer Science, Digital Arts & Experimental Media, Informatics
and Technical Communications to learn how they have launched their careers
in the technology field.
We'll host a panel from 430-530pm followed by free pizza and a chance to
mingle with your fellow students, the panelists and advisors from each
department.

Erin Covington, '07
Software Development Engineer, Amazon.com - Web link...
Erin is a software development engineer on the Reverse Logistics team. The
subteam she works on is: Customer Returns. They handle the customer-facing
return pages of Amazon's website, the refund/return logic that generates
refunds for returned items and the software that warehouse employees use
to process returned items. Their team of 11 handles all customer returns
software worldwide.
Johnathan Lyon, '06
Technical Coordinator and Senior Computer Specialist, Center for Digital
Art and Experimental Media (DXARTS) and the Center for Advanc - Web

Johnathan is currently Senior Computing Specialist and Technical
Coordinator at the Center for Digital Art and Experimental Media (DXARTS)
and the Center for Advanced Research in the Arts and Humanities (CARTAH)
at the University of Washington, received his BFA in DXARTS and BS in
Digital Signal Processing (General Studies) at the University of
Washington in 2006. He specialized in spatial audio processing,
discovering novel ways of treating audio granually in space in order to
morph the topology of 3-dimensional sound spaces. While working at the
Univeristy of Washington, he is continuing research in Bio-Enhanced
Interface Design and Technological Mediation in the Arts. His current
artistic exploits have lead him to study vangaurd scientific technology in
order develop artistic methodology via biological interventions and
posthumanist philosophy to create meta-works that bridge and question the
gap between Art and Science.

Kirk is responsible for research and analysis of structured equity
portfolios. He focuses on quantitative models, completing client research
projects and testing existing models already implemented.
