Subject: PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY: New Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget
Sound Native American Mentorship Initiative!
To: "helen775 at uw.edu" <helen775 at uw.edu>
Hello!
My name is Claudia Lawrence and I am the Tribal Match Coordinator for Big
Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound. I am the liaison between the BBBSPS
agency and the Native community for the purpose of recruiting Native youth
to be "Littles" and Native and non-Native adults to be "Bigs". My work
mostly focuses on Youth from the Puyallup Tribe but I serve all qualifying
Native Youth from our communities in forming mentorship partnerships.
In addition to recruiting adults and youth to be part of Big/Little Native
American matches, I am also forming an Advisory Council to give input and
advice on how to approach our mentoring initiative to best serve the Native
community. The Council will meet in Tacoma once a month at first and then,
in a few months, transition to meeting every other month.
If you know of any Native Youth in Seattle or Tacoma who are interested in
and who would benefit from a Mentorship with a Native Big Brother or Big
Sister, please let me know. Also please consider volunteering in our
Native American Mentorship Initiative as a Big Sister or Big Brother
yourself or perhaps referring a friend or a family member to me who might
want to be a "Big" to one of our Native youths. ****

If you cannot commit to a Mentorship, would you be interested in serving on
our Native American Mentoring Initiative Advisory Council either on the
Council directly or as a Council Consultant? Council Consultants are
community members who commit to publicly support our Program and are
willing to share their expertise and advice to the Council on an as-needed
basis. Finally, if you want to participate in a more limited capacity,
starting in late Spring/early Summer, we will have culture nights and other
one-time events coming up in Tacoma and we could use the names of folks who
are willing to volunteer and/or share their skills at those events. ****
** **
Please contact me directly with if you have questions or have interest in
helping our Youth through this Program. Thank you for your time. ****

Respectfully,
Claudia****

"You can do it." Coach said. "I can do it." "You can do it." "I can do it."
Do you understand how amazing it is to hear that from an adult? Do you know
how amazing it is to hear that from anybody? It's one of the simplest
sentences in the world, just four words, but they're the four hugest words
in the world when they're put together."
