Librarian/Biodiversity Information Specialist (2 positions)
Newly created positions - designed for starting professionals - to help
build the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) and the
Bioinformatics community. A forward-looking information management
firm is looking for creative minds and self motivation, people who are
just a cut above the rest. We're looking for future leaders. If you
have above average experience with computers, experience/background in
information sciences and/or science (biology) discipline, an ability to
present yourself professionally, and possess excellent oral and written
communication skills, then you ought to step out and up to a unique
 work experience.

Position responsibilities and duties will focus on a number of areas
with probable expansion and branching into unanticipated topics over
 time:

Building the content of NBII, for example, through research and
collection of data for specific purposes such as biodiversity programs
of domestic and international information networks and programs (e.g.,
 invasive alien species);

Electronic acquisition of content collections requiring knoweldge about
the scope and coverage of technical topics for the purpose of
populating the content of NBII. Creative "scouting" and "acquisitions
management" skills would be required for this activity.

Building partnership relationships with other organizations such as the
Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN) and the
Clearing-House Mechanism. For example, one focus could be to
standardize and provide information content on: national plans,
priorities, legislation: spatial and temporal information on the
components of biological diversity; and indigenous communities'
knowledge and innovative practices: and provide training in information
 management tools.

Conduct inventories of the tools and standards used by biologists to
manipulate systems and conduct research on futuristic methods and tools
to improve current systems, for example, incorporating more
computer-originated concepts such as icons or "walkthrough,
problem-solving wizards," rank-orders of search criteria, simultaneous
multiple data searches; intelligent search agents; multi-lingual search
 engines; and

Conceptualize dramatic new ways to retrieve information content,
drawing upon other disciplines (bio-engineering, genetics, robotics)
outside the "daily realm" of biological and information sciences:
automatic "mapping" techniques to directe searches through different
"labyrinths;" and a type of "fingerprint" system that can select out
unwanted results and match up one "fingerprint" with a known
"fingerprint," using a selectable combination of descriptive data,
 genetic, chemical, and visual characteristics.
