POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

REFERENCE LIBRARIAN - NATURALIST CENTER

 

Would you like to be a part of one of the most exciting all-green development
projects taking place in California?  If so, you might be the California
Academy of Sciences' new Reference Librarian, Naturalist Center.  We have
challenges galore for a fast learning, high energy person who wants to be a
significant player as we move into our new $484 million facility in Golden
Gate Park. 

 

Position Summary:

Reporting to the head of the Naturalist Center and working closely with the
Academy Librarian, provide reference and research help to the public and
others using the Naturalist Center collections and be responsible for the
selection, acquisition and cataloging of library materials acquired for the
center. The Naturalist Center is a venue where students, teachers and
families can explore answers to questions they have about the natural world.
Books, natural history specimens and other materials are available to peruse
with or without staff assistance.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

*         Provide reference assistance to Academy members and visitors.

*         Select and order appropriate library materials (books, journals,
videos, etc.) for the Naturalist Center collection.

*         Receive and catalog new library materials for the center.

*         Compile subject bibliographies for the Web on topics related to
current exhibits and news.

*         Responsible for library collection development (selection and
review of materials) for one or two departments within the Research Division
based on subject expertise.

*         Participate in meetings of the library staff in order to stay
current with new developments.

*         Work occasional evenings and weekends in the Naturalist Center.

*         Follow all Academy safety regulations.

*         Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are
representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable

Education and/or Experience:

Master's degree in librarianship from a degree program accredited by the
American Library Association required.  Subject expertise in areas such as
biology, ecology or environmental science.  Two or more years of professional
library experience in a museum or educational setting.

 

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities: 

*         Knowledge of science and science education, particularly in the
areas of the environment, ecology and life sciences.

*         Ability to relate well to children of varying ages as well as
adults.

*         Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

*         Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both
as a team member with other staff and volunteers as well as independently.

*         Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-faceted environment
requiring flexibility, adaptability and diplomacy.

*         Facility with MS Office suite and basic HTML/Dreamweaver or other
Web authoring tools.

 

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine
reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups or
individuals.

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative
of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required
to stand, sit, walk, and reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.  Must
be able to perform repetitive motions 25% of the time.  Must be able to lift
15 lbs.

 

Compensation/Benefits:  Salary commensurate with experience. This is a
full-time position. This position is eligible for excellent medical & dental
benefits; as well as participation in a supplemental retirement annuity and
flexible spending accounts.
