South Asia Center with support of the Arts and Sciences Exchange Program presents:
Dominance and Dignity: A Political Ethnography of North Indian Student Activism
Friday, June 1, 2007, Thom 317, 2:30-4:30 PM
Building on ethnographic research on student politics in Meerut, this paper
examines the everyday political and cultural strategies of a set of middle
caste, locally dominant student political leaders. A few students belonging to the powerful Jat and Gujar castes engage in multiple forms of illegal brokerage on campus and make substantial personal incomes from their student union posts. The paper examines how these leaders seek to preserve a core of self-esteem in the face of virulent critiques of their alleged 'corruption' and apparent betrayal of student interests.
This is the last paper in the year-long Dignity and Subalterns in South Asia Series. Other speakers in the series included Ann Gold, Aditya Behl and Sudipta Kaviraj.
Craig Jeffrey is the Assistant Professor of Geography and International Studies at the University of Washington. He is the author of Degrees Without Freedom? Education, Masculinities and Unemployment (co-authored with Patricia Jeffery and Roger Jeffery), Stanford University Press (forthcoming)

The play is a contemporary English comedy by San Francisco area based playwright Sujit Saraf and directed by Seattle based theatre artist Agastya Kohli. The play puts a spotlight on parts of our lives that we forget to acknowledge or choose to simply ignore.
