Ritual Healing and Family Unity in the Central Himalayas
Professor William Sax, Department of Anthropology at the South Asia Institute in Heidelberg, Germany
Prof. William Sax earned two BAs at the University of Washington (in South Asian Studies and Asian Languages and Literature), before moving on to the University of Chicago where he received the PhD in Anthropology in 1987. He spent two years as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University, then moved on to the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he taught for eleven years and raised his family. Since 2000, Prof. Sax has been head of the Department of Anthropology at the South Asia Institute in Heidelberg, Germany, and is presently Director of the Institute. His work has concentrated on popular culture and religion in the central Himalayas of North India, and his books include Mountain Goddess: gender and politics in a central Himalayan pilgrimage (New York: OUP, 1991), The Gods at Play: Lila in South Asia (New York: OUP, 1995), and Dancing the Self: personhood and performance in the Pandav Lila of Garhwal (New York: OUP, 2002). In his lecture, Prof. Sax will discuss one of the chapters of his forthcoming book God of Justice: ritual healing in the Central Himalayas.

IAWW solicits the participation of all India based organizations in Washington State to showcase their presentations and invites participants/choreographers who can perform/choreograph either a dance or music program in solo or in group (suitable to the event and preferably representing the rich cultural diversity of India) at the India Day function celebrating the 60th anniversary of India's Independence on Saturday, Aug. 18th.
Venue: HUB auditorium at the U.W., Seattle
Time: 4.00 p.m.-8.00 p.m.
(The hall will open at 12 noon for rehearsal)

Please contact Ponni Rajagopal, the focal of the event at ponjan at u.washington.edu with the details of your presentations/numbers and names of participants/time by Sunday July 22nd, 2007. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) Gurukul's Hindi Classes for Adults - Registration announcement Gurukul (http://www.gurukul-wa.org), a registered non-profit organization involved in teaching Hindi and Indian culture to kids and adults will start a fresh round of classes Sunday, Sept 9, 2007. Registration is now in progress for the class for adults. The Hindi class for adults will start from the absolute beginning - assuming no prior knowledge or experience with Hindi. The classes start the Sunday after labor day (September) and go through until the weekend before memorial day (May). Classes are held (practically) every Sunday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Lake Washington Technical College in Kirkland. The fee is approximately $250 for the entire year (roughly 60 hours of instruction). The Hindi class for adults assumes no prior knowledge of the language. We start at the very beginning, move relatively quickly through the sounds of the hindi alphabet and script, and start working with grammar in present tense. We follow Rupert Snell's "Teach Yourself Hindi" as the text book for the language class.
