Subject: RE: Third draft of the public health informatics competencies

| TO: Members of the Public Health Informatics Competencies Workgroup
|
| FROM: Patrick O'Carroll, CDC, at the Northwest Center for Public
| Health Practice
|
| Friends,
|
| You may recall that a number of us met in conjunction with last Fall's
APHA
| meeting, to review the second draft of the "Informatics Competencies
| for Public Health Professionals." I have finally finished
| incorporating the changes and recommendations made at that VERY
| productive meeting! The
third
| (and hopefully, near-final) draft of this document is now available at

|
| The main changes since the last draft are:
|
| o reorganization of the competencies into three classes: (a) Class
| One, related to the use of information per se; (b) Class Two, related
| to the
use
| of information technology; and (c) Class THREE, related to the
| management
of
| information technology projects. (With one exception, all of the Class

| One competencies were drawn verbatim from the Council on Linkages Core

| Competencies listing.)
|
| o addition of proposed LEVELS OF SKILL (Aware, Knowledgeable, and
| Proficient) for each of the competencies, by workforce segment
| (front-line staff, senior-level technical staff, and
| supervisory/management staff). In keeping with our general approach, I

| adopted the terms and definitions of the Council on Linkages for the
| definition of these skill levels.
|
| If you have time, can you please review this latest draft? In
| particular, please see whether you agree with the levels of skill I
| have specified for the Class Two and Three competencies. I believe we
| are now fairly near our goal of releasing a useful "version one"
| document, but I would be happy to consider any suggestions for
| improvement.
|
|
| Best wishes to you all, and THANKS for all your help in the
| development of these competencies. I really believe they should be
| very useful in giving
us
| a common starting ground for the development of real-world-relevant
training
| for public health professionals!
|
| Patrick
