Wanted to let folks know about the 1 week public health informatics course
I'll be teaching with two colleagues at the Graduate Summer Session in
Epidemiology at the University of Michigan (course is 7/15-19/2002). [note:
no honoraria are being accepted by faculty of this course]

Epid 775 Public Health Informatics
(1 credit hour) William Yasnoff, Nancy Allee, and Pete Kitch
This course is an introduction to the field of public health informatics,
the systematic application of information and computer science and
technology to public health practice and research. Students will learn
practical principles and techniques enabling them to become effective
managers of information system development projects and serve as high-level
advisors to policy makers and scientists at federal, state and local health
agencies regarding the acquisition, development, and management of
integrated, enterprise-wide public health information systems. Topics
include information architecture, database design, networks, data standards,
privacy, confidentiality, security, managing information technology people
and projects, information resource management, avoiding information system
disasters, and effective Internet use. Prerequisites: Familiarity with the
use of personal computers, and experience using at least one public health
data system. Prior work in a public health agency helpful. No previous
computer science or programming training required.
