Subject: Satellite Training Schedule from the Public Health Training Netwo rk
Hello. CDC has a web page for to the Public Health Training
Network (PHTN) at http://www.cdc.gov/phtn. PHTN is a
network of public, private, academic, and business organizations
supporting a distance learning system that uses a variety of
instructional media ranging from print-based to videotape and
multimedia to meet the training needs of the public health workforce
nationwide. They have a calendar on-line that lists and describes
videoconferences and audioconferences on a variety of public
health topics. Some conferences of potential interest to nutritionists
include:
Date Subject (Sponsor)
Sept. 1 - Translating Healthy People Objectives into Local
Targets -- audioconference (Public Health Foundation)
Sept. 16 - Cholesterol Awareness (AL Dept. of Public Health)
Sept. 24 - Measuring Up: A Blueprint for Building Quality
Assurance (University of Illinois at Chicago)
Oct. 1 - Lessons Learned for 2010 -- audioconference
(Public Health Foundation)
Oct. 13 and 20 - Practical Evaluation of Public Health Programs
(CDC; ASPH; PHTN; Texas Dept. of Health; Univ. of Texas-Houston)
Fall 1998 - Youth Eating Disorders (Visionary Productions)
Nov. 18 - Diabetes (AL Dept. of Public Health)
Nov. 19 - Management and Prevention of Osteoporosis

Please access the PHTN website for details on registering for

Below is the description for the Oct. 13 and 20 videoconferences
on evaluation, which is sponsored in part by CDC.
Thank you,

Practical Evaluation of Public Health Programs
A Public Health Training Network Satellite Broadcast
October 13, 1998 1:00 - 3:00 PM EST, Part 1 of 2
October 20, 1998 1:00 - 4:00 PM EST, Part 2 of 2
Have you ever lost funding for a program because you had
no way to prove its excellence? An evaluation plan and report
could have highlighted your successes to decision-makers.
Producing such evidence is just one of the many advantages
that program evaluation provides. Designed for non-statisticians,
this course will enable participants to learn: 1) why program
evaluation and building commitment for it are important; and
2) how to design and conduct practical and effective program
evaluation in a team environment. Learners will be able to
interact with experts from state and local health departments,
schools of public health, and the CDC during the broadcast.
Following the live broadcasts, a video-taped version of the
course and its accompanying workbook will be available
through the PHTN for small-group and self-instructional
applications.
Objectives
After participating in these broadcasts, participants will be able to:
Define program evaluation in practical terms
Explain the importance of evaluation and assurance in the current
public health environment
Name three reasons why evaluation is important to their program
Identify three barriers to evaluation and determine how they can
be overcome by use of a practical evaluation model
Identify the essential characteristics of practical evaluation
Describe the relationship between well-written, quantifiable
program objectives and program evaluation
Write one measurable outcome and one process objective for
their program
Identify the elements of a program evaluation plan
List the principles for implementing the evaluation plan
Target Audience
Those who have responsibility for implementing programs in
public health departments and other community-based
organizations: nurses, health educators, health program specialists,
public health technicians, inspectors, sanitarians, epidemiologists,
clinicians, social workers, and support staff. Those who establish
policy for public health programs in public health departments
and other community-based organizations: program managers
and coordinators, department/program administrators, and health
directors.
