This unique national conference and retreat's purpose is to assist you, the school nurse/school health personnel participant in looking back over your school nurse practice. Situated in Texas' renowned Riverwalk playground you will be provided a phenomenal location to update, refresh, review and grasp an enhanced outlook and vision for your school nurse role. By the end of day one, you, the school nurse should be able to: (1) Discuss three ways and reasons to celebrate school nursing today, (2) Describe at least 7 mandates, rules, regulations and position statements impacting legal practice at school, (3) Share at least two practical nursing applications for your role gleaned from three administrative, clinical or educational sessions, and (4) Relate 3 ways you might note the existence of curandero or folk medicine practices at school. At the end of day two, you should be able to (1) Describe at least three border/regional or national issues impacting our schools, (2) Denote ways to work alone or as a team to get administrators, boards, and staff to understand practice issues, (3) Detail choices for excellence in life and work that are open to school nurses, and (4) Discuss three techniques, strategies or approaches learned in three different administrative, clinical or educational sessions to more effectively practice school nursing. PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The purpose of this one-day program is to increase the school nurse's knowledge, skills and abilities in caring for the child with asthma in the school setting.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: By the end of the program the participant should be able to
1. Detail asthma, and its etiology and prevalence in school age children today.
2. Discuss at least 5 roles of the school nurse in caring for the child with asthma in the school setting.
3. Describe the current medications and treatments, supplies and equipment, for the child with asthma in the school setting.
4. Explain the comprehensive nursing assessment, care plan (IHP) and emergency management of the child with asthma in the school setting.

With over 20 years experience in nursing and nursing education, both nationally and internationally, Joyce has an in-depth knowledge, understanding and unique insight into the health care issues of today. Joyce is a consultant, business owner, presenter, author, and provider of educational services in the health care field. She is a certified legal nurse consultant (C.L.N.C.), and a trained image consultant. She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau: National Nursing Honor Society, the National Association of School Nurses, the Intravenous Nurses Society, and the National Speaker's Association. Joyce has presented numerous workshops and seminars throughout Texas and the U.S. to school nurses and administrative personnel.
As an author, Joyce has written several manuals specific to school nursing, including "Medication Administration in the School Setting: Issues, Policies, Legalities" and "Documentation: Protect Your License & Yourself from Medical-Legal Liability by Creating Great Documentation Forms". She has also created several poster series concerning the roles and practices of the nurse in the school setting. Course Objectives: This course will ease the unlicensed assistive worker into the critical issues, trends, mandates, and ideas that should guide their assistive practice. The faculty leader will cover relevant practice issues applicable to the role and allowed practices of the unlicensed assistive worker. Care will be taken to reinforce and instill in the worker the necessity for confidentiality and no privacy infringements. Issues related to allowed procedures, required orientation, education, training and supervision will also be spelled out. The school health aide or assistant will hear the cornerstones applicable to the following of policies and procedures, documentation realities, how not to get accused of practicing nursing without a license and how to handle clients, model professionalism and communicate well. A variety of handouts and real time content germane to his or her practice will be shared along with much time for questions, answers, and networking. This program has been developed to meet the unique needs of unlicensed assistive workers at school. It is a must for unlicensed staff and is very protective and attentive to school organizational issues germane to legal issues of practice.
