I agree.

Since I self identify as a public health nurse, I would have preferred to be
credentialled as such rather than the certification in community health. I
believe that if are to educate nurses to provide population based services,
then we should provide for certification in that speciality of public health
nursing. With no disrespect intended to my colleagues in home
health/community health, the skill set for public health nursing is
different. However, in the interest of not using every letter in the
alphabet to identify ourselves it might be of value to offer credentialing
in public/community health within the purview of one exam. Miriam Cohen

Hi,

I think this will be in line with the thread of discussion about standards
of performance. I find myself involved in frequent discussions about
credentialing for Public Health Nurses.

Credentialing the public health workforce has become a major area of
discussion. ASPH and APHA chair a committee examining the broad issue of
credentialing the entire public health workforce.

Several years ago ANA published Scope and Standards of Practice for Public
Health Nursing, a first step in a possible process leading to a
credentialing exam for public health nurses.

How do members of the listserve feel about a public health nurse
credentialing exam? Would PHNs be interested?

Thanks,

Diane

thank you for sharing that information. As part of an ongoing initiative for
standards of performance for local health departments, New Jersey is
developing a best practices document for public health nursing. It is
helpful to learn what is being done by colleagues. Miriam Cohen

We are Public Health so there was not much published in outcomes. The
outcomes we developed are based on the dimension of health (Clark) based on
Nursing Diagnoses that has a PH focus. Our interventions we took some from
NIC but had to improvise. We also took into consideration Healthy People
2010 directives and PH Core functions.
