Safe and Healthy Schools Project
1) HIV Prevention Project Director
Summary: NASBE is searching for a full-time director of its CDC-funded
project to provide capacity-building assistance on HIV prevention
policies and programs to state education agencies and large school
districts. The position is based in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia and
requires periodic travel. Strong writing and program development skills,
and a background in education policy, are essential. The salary is
negotiable and commensurate with experience, and includes a full package
of benefits.
General Duties:
- Administer all aspects of a five-year cooperative agreement with CDC's
Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) to "Strengthen
Leadership and Governance for HIV Prevention," including implementation
of the activities proposed in NASBE application for funding according to
established timelines; fulfilling all award requirements including
conducting evaluation activities and preparing reports and workplans;
and otherwise serving as point of contact with CDC on this project.
- Provide customized capacity-building assistance on strengthening
school-based HIV prevention policies and programs to DASH-funded state
education agencies and large school districts through telephone, e-mail,
and on-site services. Assistance will be provided according to
mutually-determined goals and priorities and could involve facilitating
meetings, planning needs assessments, drafting policies, making
presentations, conducting workshops, or similar activities as
appropriate.
- Write or revise policy guidance materials regarding school-based HIV
prevention programs.
- Plan and participate in collaborative activities with colleague health
and education organizations.
- Assist in identifying state-level school health policies for inclusion
in NASBE's online state school health policy database.
- Research and write succinct essays of summary and analysis of the 50
states' policies on HIV-related school health topics.
- Locate and obtain additional funding for project-related activities.
- Assist in general NASBE duties including occasional writing tasks,
meeting planning and staffing, staff meetings, and retreats.
Required Qualifications:
- Masters-level degree in Public Policy, Education, or Public Health
- Five years relevant experience in education policy or program
development related to HIV prevention or school health programs
- Strong verbal, interpersonal communications, and facilitation skills
- Strong research, analytical, and writing skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and with minimal supervision as part
of a professional team
- Ability to travel periodically
- Proficiency using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Access, Excel, and
PowerPoint
2) Project Associate/Policy Analyst
Summary: This full-time school health policy position at NASBE's offices
in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia primarily involves maintenance and
improvement of NASBE's online state school health policy database. The
Project Associate will also assist with evaluation and other activities
of two CDC-funded capacity-building assistance projects on "Increasing
Healthy Eating" and "Strengthening Leadership and Governance for HIV
Prevention." The salary is negotiable, commensurate with experience, and
includes a full package of benefits.
General Duties:
- Systematically locate and collect complete sets of state-level school
health policies that address curriculum and instruction, staff
certification, student services, accommodations, school environment, and
coordination/implementation topics, via Internet searches and telephone
and written contacts.
- Develop brief written summaries of each new policy and post them to
the online state school health policy database with hyperlinks to actual
policies whenever available.
- Monitor news reports and legislative update websites for relevant
changes in laws and policies and periodically consult with state
officials to review each state's policy profile for accuracy and
completeness.
- Research and write succinct essays of summary and analysis of the 50
states' policies on specific school health topics.
- Assist in revising written policy guidance materials regarding school
health programs.
- Provide technical assistance on the development of school health
policies in writing, by telephone, and in person.
- Occastionally conduct workshops, presentations, and informational
sessions on current best practice recommendations for school health
programs.
- Participate in collaborative activities with colleague health and
education organizations.
- Assist in general project duties including conducting evaluation
activities, planning and conducting project meetings and conferences,
and preparing applications, workplans, and reports.
- Assist in general NASBE duties including occasional writing tasks,
meeting planning and staffing, staff meetings, and retreats.
Required Qualifications:
- Masters-level degree in Public Policy, Education, or Public Health
- Two years relevant experience with school health, education, or public
health policy
- Strong research, analytical, and writing skills
- General verbal and interpersonal communications skills
