This is in regards to Laurie Wadsworth's posting for nutr. education
curricula. I suggest you get a hold of two curricula that are targeted
to elementary teachers. One is called Every Day, Lots of Ways (K-6
grades). The second is called Mid-LINC (6-8 grades). They were
developed by the Penn State Nutrition Center with funding from USDA, NET
via the Pensylvania Dept. of Education. Every Day, Lots of Ways is
distributed by the PA Dept. of Education, NET Program. Mid-LINC is sold
by the Penn State Nutrition Center. Each NET office in each state has a
copy of these curricula. You can probably borrow them from your state
NET office. The curricula include complete lesson plans, worksheets,
background materials, etc on a variety of nutrition topics. They will
be perfect for elementary and middle school educators. FNIC also may
have a copy of them in their collection, and if so, you can borrow them
from FNIC. In addition to these two curricula, I just completed writing
a high school interdisciplinary curriculum that addresses five nutrition
topics/thematic units: Special Concerns in Nutrition, Alternative Eating
(e.g., vegetarianism), Disordered Eating, Food Safety, and Physical
Activity. The curriculum is called SLIC: Secondary Level
Interdisciplinary Curriculum and is targeted to 9-12 grades and
incorporates nutrition across the curriculum into chemistry, biology,
environmental science, algebra, consumer math, business education,
English, American history, family and consumer sciences and health. The
curriculum is currently being printed and distributed by the PA Dept. of
Education, NET office only to high schools in PA. Each NET coordinator
in each state will also receive a copy but it may be a few weeks before
they receive their copies. If you are not in Pennsylvania and are
interested in obtaining a copy of the SLIC curriculum, email me. Thanks.
