Subject: Reminder re Scholarships for Certificate Program

Health Officials (ASTHO), is offering approximately 40 guaranteed
scholarship slots to public health department employees for a graduate
certificate program in public health. The completed application must be
submitted to CDC by April 24, 1998.
WHAT IS IT?
The Graduate Certificate Program (GCP) is an innovative approach to
provide public health practitioners critical public health training. This
focused curriculum was developed by CDC and four top Schools of Public
Health: Emory University, Johns-Hopkins University, Tulane University, and
the University of Washington. Offered in a non-traditional way, the GCP
allows working professionals the opportunity to pursue essential graduate
level credits while remaining employed.
Students earn between 21 - 35 semester or quarter hours of graduate course
credit that may be transferable to a MPH program.
WHO IS ELEIGIBLE TO APPLY?
CDC, in conjunction with ASTHO, is offering scholarships to support state,
city and county public health professionals who are interested in pursuing
this educational opportunity. Scholarships will cover tuition, books, and
materials, and a laptop computer for use while enrolled in the GCP. The
cost of travel and per diem for on-campus sessions is not provided. These
scholarships will be awarded through a competitive application process.
Final admission decision will be determined by the school the candidate
has applied to.
WHERE IT IS?
The GCP combines traditional classroom instruction with distance based
education methods to offer a unique opportunity to develop and enhance
public heatlh skills and expertise. Students are on-campus 6-7 weeks over
the course of a 15-18 month academic calendar, and studens are never
on-campus more than 2-weeks at a time. The majority of course work is
done at a distance, using asynchronous or distributed educations methods.
Students will interact and access course information via the Internet and
World Wide Web (www). This means that students can do course work
anywhere, anyplace and anytime.
PROGRAM START DATES
Classes start in the Summer of 1998 and finish in the Fall of 1999.
Specific start and finish dates vary by school. They are: Johns Hopkins
- June 28th, Emory - July 6th, Tulane - July 18th and University of
Wahsington - July 26th.
FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS
The scholarship which is paid by CDC covers full tuition, fees, laptop PC,
