Washington state is currently reviewing and revising its reportable
disease surveillance system. A part of this process will be the
development of common data standards and database architecture standards
for reportable disease data. This will take a coordinated planning effort
between the state health agency and local health jurisdictions. In
Washington, local health agencies are autonomous, and agreement on
standards will need to come through a consensus process. Have any other
states implemented similar processes? If so, how did you organize the
effort and how did you make sure that it resulted in a realistic, useable
product? Do other states have reportable disease data standards? Please
send any ideas or suggestions to Jac Davies, Washington Department of
Health, at JJD0303 at DOH.WA.GOV, or call (206)361-4883.
