You need to find a copy of the ADA Clincial Practice Recommendatoins 2000.
It is in the Jan Suppl 1 issue of Diabetes Care, Jan 2000. The
recommendations are the same for either type of diabetes.

Subject: lean, older newly diagnosed diabetics

Dear Colleagues,

I am looking for nutrition information that specifically addresses the
needs
of older individuals who are newly diagnosed with diabetes, but who are
lean. The Am. Diabetes Assoc. web site does not contain information about
this class of diabetics. My understanding is that for these people,
peripheral insulin resistance is not the principal issue that needs to be
addressed. My understanding is that the underlying problem in these lean
diabetics is impaired insulin secretion. Are the dietary recommendations
for these people the same as for the "classic" obese, type 2?

Are there resources (such as a web site or publication) to which I can
refer
people?

Thanks in advance,
Annie
