Purpose of the Conference

In today's health care environment, an appropriate blend of people,
knowledge, and technology is critical to meet education and practice
needs of the public health workforce. The Public Health Informatics and
Distance Learning Conference: Blending People and Technology to Improve
Practice serves as a forum for exchanging information on informatics and
distance learning.

The intended audience includes representatives of academic public
health, state and local public health departments, federal agencies,
federal grantees, public and medical libraries, and telecommunication
and information system companies that create or deliver public health
informatics or training products. The program will feature examples of
how people and technology can work together to positively impact public
health practice.

The objectives of the conference, and suggested topics, are:

¨ To improve the practice of distance learning in public health
Preparing faculty to use distance methodologies to teach
Preparing students to learn using distance methodologies

Evaluating distance learning
Choosing an appropriate distance learning medium
Examples of workforce development using distance learning
Legislative developments
Best practices--linking with partners to accomplish goals

¨ To advance the informatics infrastructure in public health
Using technology
Project management
Launching new networks/applications
Requirements analysis
Communicating with technical gurus
Human side of networks
Legislative issues
Informatics research

You are invited to attend the Public Health Informatics and Distance
Learning Conference and submit a proposal for a presentation at the
conference. Presentation formats will be as follows:

¨ Concurrent Sessions: Within each concurrent session, presentations

participate in three roundtable discussions of 30 minutes in length.
During each 30-minute roundtable, presenters will have 15 minutes to
present and 15 minutes for discussion.
¨ Demonstration Presentation: This is an opportunity for individuals to
demonstrate successful public health informatics and distance learning
projects and products. From web-based, to video, to print-based
materials--we want to see what you have been doing with distance
learning and informatics as it applies to public health. Within each 45
minute session the presenter should spend approximately 30 minutes
sharing the history and development of the product or project, leaving
15 minutes for discussion with the audience about lessons learned,
technology used, and any other questions.
¨ Poster Session: Presenters will have a 4' x 8' foot usable surface for
