chocolate and constipation

Walter,

I am just finishing a consumer booklet on IBS. In it, we diagram the layers
of intestinal muscles. One layer is longitudinal, which, when stimulated,
passes food through the intestines. One layer is circular, which, when
stimulated, constricts and slows intestinal transit. Depending on which set
of muscles are overstimulated, you will get either constipation or diarrhea.
If you look at the literature on irritable bowel syndrome, you will see it
divided into constipation-type or diarrhea-type. I wonder if you did a study
on the subject, if you would see two clusters of data around both of these
possible outcomes, depending on which set of muscles in each individual is
more dominant.
