offered by the Continuing Education Network (CEN) of the Center for
Health Promotion and Prevention Research (CHPPR) at the University of
Texas-Houston School of Public Health.

Intervention Mapping: Developing and evaluating
theory- and evidence-based programs for
health education and health promotion
Overview
The purpose of this course is to integrate and extend behavioral-science
theory to planning models for health-promotion programs. The
participants have hands-on individual and group experience in developing
projects from their own work settings. Teaching methods include
* case studies
* guided practice in health-promotion planning from a variety of
settings:
* school
* work-site
* health-care
* community
Audience
* Health professionals who confront the challenge of developing
effective behavioral- and environmental-change programs
* University faculty who want to enhance instruction in
* health-education and health-promotion planning
* application of behavioral-science theory
Performance Objectives for Participants
* Use behavioral and social-science theory, empirical literature,
and new data to influence changes in behavior and environmental
conditions.
* Assess individual and community needs for health promotion.
* Develop program goals and performance objectives for changes in
behavior and environmental conditions.
* Create matrices of proximal program objectives to accomplish
change at the individual, organizational, and community levels.
* Design powerful intervention methods, strategies, and creative
programs using Intervention Mapping.
* Apply Intervention Mapping methods to design interventions to
ensure program adoption and implementation.
Preparation
To make your learning during the course both active and relevant, be
familiar beforehand with
* various behavioral and social-science theories that have been
applied to health education and health promotion
* one or more needs-assessment processes.
