PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATICS FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, SEATTLE

Full-time funded fellowships are available for MS, PhD, and
postdoctoral-level
training in Public Health Informatics (PHI) through UW's Biomedical and
Health Informatics (BHI) Training Program. These fellowships begin in July
2006, and the application deadline is January 15th, 2006. The various PHI
training options and admission requirements are summarized below; more
information about the BHI training program in general can be found at
the BHI
website:

Public health informatics is the systematic application of information and
computer science and technology to enhance public health research,
practice and
training. The University of Washington is emerging as a national leader
in the
field, hosting one of two CDC-funded Centers of Excellence in Public Health
Informatics. UW is also one of four universities offering funded
training in
PHI in cooperation with the National Library of Medicine and the Robert
Wood
Johnson Foundation.

Public Health Informatics MS training option (MS-PHI): The goal of the
MS-PHI
option is to train leaders in public health information management and
system
design, and is designed for public health practitioners who wish to
pursue an
informatics career in a public health setting. In addition to the
regular BHI
MS core curriculum MS-PHI students complete a three course module in PHI,
participate in PHI colloquia, and complete a thesis focused on public
health
informatics.

Public Health Informatics PhD training option (PhD-PHI): The PhD-PHI
option
does not require previous public health training or work experience. In
addition to the regular BHI PhD core curriculum PhD-PHI students complete a
three-course module in PHI and participate in PHI colloquia. They also
receive
general public health training from three core courses from the MPH
curriculum,
participation in a week-long Summer Institute for Public Health
Practice, and a
public health practicum. The topic of the PhD dissertation is expected to
relate to public health informatics.

Public Health Informatics postgraduate training option (PG-PHI): The
PG-PHI
option is for individuals from a variety of backgrounds who are
interested in
working with our faculty on their ongoing research projects. In addition to
traditional post-doctoral trainees (e.g. post-PhD, MD, DO, and DDS) we
invite
and encourage applications from those with Master's degrees in Computer
Science, Library and Information Science, Public Health, and Nursing.
Previous
public health training or work experience is not required.

Admissions Requirements
The basic requirements for the MS and PhD options are the same as for
entry to
the BHI graduate degree program:
* Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an institution within the
United States OR an equivalent degree from a recognized college or
university
from outside the United States.
* A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4-point
scale).
* Prior formal college-level coursework in mathematics (including
statistics), computer programming, and biology or healthcare.

In addition to the regular BHI admissions requirements, applicants for the
MS-PHI option are expected have a graduate degree in public health (MPH or
degree equivalent) or significant experience working in a public health
setting.

Potential candidates for the post-graduate option should contact us to
discuss
their research interests in the field.

Eligibility for NLM/RWJ fellowships requires US citizenship or permanent
resident status.
