In Most American Preschoolers, Quality of Diet Needs to Improve

Summary: In a cross-sectional study examining data from a nationally
representative sample (n=5,437) of American preschoolers participating
in the Continuing Survey of Food Intake by Individuals (CSFII) 1994-96,
and 1998, most children were found to not meet the dietary intake
recommendations for added sugar and dietary fiber. The children were
categorized into 3 groups – 1) those who met the dietary recommendations
for added sugar intake (less than or equal to 10% of energy intake) and
dietary fiber (14g in 2-3 year olds, and 20g in 4-5 year olds); 2) those
who met only 1 of the dietary recommendations; 3) those who met neither
of the dietary recommendations. Dietary added sugar and dietary fiber
sources were ascertained. Only 236 children were observed to be meeting
the intake recommendations for both added sugar and dietary fiber, as
opposed to 1,502 children who were meeting one of the intake
recommendations, and 3,699 children who were meeting neither of the
intake recommendat ions. Additionally, children meeting both intake
recommendations had better diet quality and higher energy intake,
compared to children meeting one intake recommendation or neither intake
recommendations. Thus, the findings of this study indicate that most
American preschoolers do not meet the dietary recommendations for added
sugar and dietary fiber, and suggest that more should be done to
increase dietary fiber density and reduce added sugar in their diets, in
order to improve diet quality and oral health
