Reference: "The influence of micronutrients on cognitive function and
performance," Huskisson E, Maggini S, Ruf M, Journal of Int'l Medical
Research, 2007; 35(1): 1-19. (Address: Ruf M, Bayer Consumer Care AG,
CH-4052, Basel, Switzerland).

Summary: In this review article, studies investigating the influence of
micronutrients on cognitive function and performance were reviewed.
Recent clinical trials, reviews, editorials and meetings investigating
the role of individual micronutrients were identified and reviewed. The
micronutrients found to be the most closely related to cognitive
performance were the water-soluble vitamins, such as the B group and C,
as well as the minerals, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. Even marginal
deficiencies of these vitamins and minerals were found to affect
cognitive performance. The authors point out that deficiencies in these
micronutrients are not uncommon, even in 'developed' countries. Groups
such as the elderly and those exposed to stressful lifestyles and
occupational pressures were found to be even more vulnerable to the
effects of these micronutrient deficiencies on cognitive performance.
The conclusions of this review article suggest that sufficient intake of
all micronutrients, particularly those vitamins and minerals highlighted
in this article, may help to maintain normal cognitive function and
performance.
