If I was working on solving this problem I would try

pine -d verbose=7,imap=4

or maybe

pine -d verbose=9,imap=4,timestamp

Then run a short pine session where you try to remember all that you did
and when you saw the big delay. If you're lucky, the delay will show up in
the debug file almost all in one spot and you'll have narrowed the problem
down to authentication, or to opening the remote pinerc, or the inbox, or
something.
