Thanks to Steve Hubert who got me looking in the right place, for some
bizarre reason, in my new pinerc file (the fast one), I had 
viewer-margin-right set to 40!

Setting that to 0 fixes this part of the puzzle.

I still haven't gotten to running the old/slow one with full imap debug
logs on but hopefully will sometime soon.
