Wow! I don't know why I hadn't checked out a2ps before. I was about to
suggest using pr to prettyprint pine messages but a2ps is a more
powerful tool. Though it took a bit of reading to figure out how to get
anything like the output I wanted... 

What I can't seam to find however is a way to suppress the the printing
of an additional page with one line such as:

request id is hp5650-227 (1 file(s))

Which I don't get when I use pr... Would you happen to know how to ditch
the request id info page???

Otherwise I get fairly good results from:

a2ps -1 -b"" -q --margin=13 --left-title=%E --center-title="pine via a2ps" --right-title="( page %p. of %p# )"|lpr -P hp5650

I use -b"" instead of -B to suppress the sheet header line that defaults
to "printed by" because -B caused the bottom border line to miss the
printable part of the paper! ???

I probably should ditch the -q as "-q, --quiet, --silent" doesn't
suppress that follow up request id info page. <sigh> 

I used "pine via a2ps" because I couldn't figure out how you get an actual
message title in the header. (If you mean you get pine to insert the
text of the Subject: header line into the a2ps command it probably
wouldn't fit half the time unless I moved the date and page numbers to
page footers. But it'd be worth it if I knew how.)
