Thanks, you solved the problem!
2 remarks:
      (i) the PINE help files state explicitly that in the parameters used
          (with inbox-path=) the letter case doesn't matter, so you guessed
          right there as well,

     (ii) the same info isn't that clear regarding the problem I had; it
          says that when you specify /ssl this excludes trying a non-secure
          connection (or something like that), but never warns that there
          are cases in which a secure connection REQUIRES the use of the
          /ssl parameter. At least that's how I (mis)understood the info.
