It's a C library which is a first attempt at separating the user interface
from the lower level stuff.

We have frozen development on Pine, and our focus is on Alpine which
continues the Pine tradition. We will continue to support Pine until it
no longer makes sense or is no longer needed, but our plan is to
eventually support only Alpine. You can think of Alpine as a version 5
Pine without going too far wrong. Besides the unix command-line client
there will also be a Windows version like before and a new web-based
version.
