Whoops, forgot to reply to this part, and I admit I haven't read the rest
of this thread.
While it isn't an xterm, Terminal on Mac OS X *does* support UTF-8.
(Though it is confusingly, to me, calling it the "Character Set Encoding"
which sounds to me like pine's setting!) I'm currently using
Western (ISO Latin 1) for example.
