thank you for your useful reply.
nervertheless, I expected that somebody will give me the name of a
"better program"...
mailutil works fine, but I don't see how it can be plugged into a checking
program: this kind of program usually checks the mail with a time
interval from 1 to 5 minutes, but it stores your passowrd
internally, so that you have to type it only once, at program startup.
It seems that this is not possible with mailutil.

For the moment, as a workaround, I just kill gnubiff before running pine,
and restart it after...

PS: Sorry for having forgotten the subject...With some lists, your mail
is rejected in that case.
