Oh, one more clue I just worked out: the imap libraries on each system
are different. The working system is using imap-uw-2004enb2 (the nb2
just indicates that the pkgsrc-specific patches for this package have
been updated twice--these are mostly Makefile and compile tweaks, such
as removing 'extern int errno;' from C files), and the broken system is
using imap-uw-2004gnb2. The server is using imap-uw-2004g.

Perhaps as my next step I'll start comparing imap protocol dumps, though
getting access to the unencrypted ones is going to be a pain (I'll
probably have to take apart ktrace dumps).
