Subject: [NNLMALL] FYI Grant info.

Although the number of Spanish-speaking U.S. Internet users
seeking health-related information continues to increase, and
half are "Spanish dominant," most e-health sites are in English
only. This means a segment of the population is blocked from
access to much of the quality medical information available
online-and signals a new communications opportunity for health-
related sites. Some 13 million U.S. Hispanics do not speak
English well, according to figures from the 2000 U.S. Census; and
many physicians are unable to communicate with Spanish-speaking
patients, according to a recent report by the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation. The Foundation's survey of 500 Spanish-speaking
consumers in communities with fast-growing Latino communities
concluded that nearly one in five had delayed or avoided going
for needed medical care because of language barriers with an
English-speaking doctor. In response, the Foundation has created
a new program, called "Hablamos Juntos" (We Talk Together;
http://www.hablamosjuntos.org), to develop cost-effective models
for Spanish translation services to help providers overcome
language barriers. The program is open to physician groups,
hospitals, health centers, managed care plans, and others.
