TITLE: Head, Systems, Health Sciences Libraries

LOCATION: Univ of Washington Health Sciences Library

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The University of Washington Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) seeks an
innovative, user-oriented and technically proficient individual to provide
leadership and vision to a team of talented experts committed to utilizing
technology to deliver information at the point of need to faculty, staff
and students in the health sciences.  The HSL serves over 20,000
individuals, including: top-ranked Schools of Medicine, Public Health and
Community Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Social Work; a top
rated public university biomedical research program; and two large
academic medical centers and their affiliated neighborhood clinics.  A
nationally recognized regional educational program offers training sites
throughout Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI).  The
HSL is composed of the Health Sciences Library and Information Center, the
Social Work Library and the K.K. Sherwood Library at Harborview Medical
Center, and is a part of the University Libraries with close affiliations
with the Health Sciences Schools.  The HSL serves as the regional Library
for the Pacific Northwest, National Network of Libraries of Medicine.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

As leader of the HSL systems development team, this position is
responsible for the overall direction, administration and management of UW
HSL computer resources, systems and networking including:

1.  Planning, development, implementation, integration and support for all
computing resources, systems and networking

2.  Manages and supervises 2 FTE senior computer specialists and students

3.  Develops and supports computer applications for library staff

4.  Oversees user needs assessment and evaluation of digital services

5.  Collaborates with Health Sciences Schools and Medical Centers,
University Libraries and others in planning and delivering digital
information and educational resources

6.  Identifies and evaluates new information technologies for integration
into library services that improve user and staff time, effort and
workflow

7.  Supervises systems administration and educational technology support
groups for public and staff computing, including printing,
desktops/notebooks, wireless, videoconferencing, media archive, servers,
security, networking, web platform, and other specialized technologies for
digital services

8.  Serves as liaison for assigned departments in the health sciences,
including providing information regarding library services and programs,
subject-specific teaching, consultation and resources selection and
information desk consultation

9.  Engages teaching, scholarship and service

10.  Participates as a member of the HSL leadership group


QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association, or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies
degree, or a graduate degree in information systems or other relevant
discipline.
  2. Strong customer service and communication skills
  3. Minimum of three years of experience in library systems and
networking operations in a complex environment that includes hands-on work
with database-driven web sites with a thorough understanding of relational
databases and web architecture
  4. Demonstrable expertise with Windows XP, MS SQL, Cold
Fusion/ASP/.Net/PHP
  5. Management of Unix and Windows servers
  6. Hands-on experience with middleware including XML, XHTML,
DreamWeaver, Javascript
  7. Excellent analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  8. Demonstrated project management experience
  9. Supervisory experience
  10. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  11. Ability to identify important trends and development in IT of
significance for the library and lead the development of responsive
systems and programs.

Desirable:

  1. Experience with Photoshop, Flash and streaming video
  2. Experience in an academic health sciences library
  3. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with
multi-disciplinary teams throughout the health sciences community
  4. Grant writing experience
  5. Record of involvement in professional associations and/or evidence of
publications or presentations


SALARY:  $50,000 minimum.  Starting salary commensurate with
qualifications and background.


BENEFITS: Participation in the University of Washington Retirement Plan
(TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, SAFECO Mutual Funds and/or Fidelity
Investments) on a matching basis.  Generous vacation; sick leave at the
rate of 12 working days per year.  No state or local income tax.
