Subject: Opportunity to Get Involved

Please excuse the cross-posting.

PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM NOT THE CONTACT PERSON FOR THIS ANNOUNCEMENT, I AM PASSING
IT ALONG FYI. Contact AAP for more informatin or to sign up.

For more information on the project, call the AAP at 847/981-4980 or
e-mail hmhss at aap.org. More information can also be found at the Web site
http://www.schoolhealth.org.

The AAP is soliciting professional volunteers to become part of their
MCH-funded initiative to develop health and safety guidelines for children
in school settings. The long message below explains it all, but the
bottom line (pulled from the middle...) is: "...The AAP and the NASN are
seeking input from a wide variety of health and education professionals,
whose expertise and input to the school health guidelines project is
critical. ... Fourteen expert panels will be established to review
existing guidelines and draft new recommendations that will be circulated
widely for review. The process of guidelines development will begin in
early 1999 and may last up to two years. The process of reviewing the
drafts will begin shortly thereafter."

In my opinion, several of the expert panels would benefit from nutritionist
input. [Laura says, and from your viewpoint, too].

If you are interested in participating, you might need to visit the
website or call AAP at the number enclosed to get a better form to fill
out. It might not have transferred well via email from me.

American Academy of Pediatrics National Association of School Nurses

Through a cooperative agreement with the Maternal and Child Health Bureau,
Health Resources and Services Administration, the American Academy of
Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses are developing a
comprehensive reference document of guidelines and recommendations on
aspects of health, mental health, and safety for students and staff
enrolled and working in elementary, middle/junior and high schools in the
United States. Hundreds of national organizations and health and
education professionals from across the country will participate in this
four-year initiative.

When completed, the compendium will provide school nurses, school
physicians, school administrators, school districts, school boards, health
and education professionals and other community groups with needed
guidance and with uniform answers to straightforward questions as well as
more complicated issues, such as: What are the best practices for
administering medication to students? How should issues of
confidentiality and parental consent be handled in school-based health
centers? What are some steps to handle homicide and suicide in our
schools? How should schools handle issues arising from children with
special health care needs, from transportation to ôdo-not-resuscitateö
orders?

Why do schools and health and education professionals need comprehensive
school health and safety guidelines?

Children cannot learn in unsafe or unhealthy school environments. Health
problems and health risk behaviors are becoming increasingly serious for
this nationÆs youth. Public attention is focusing on the schoolÆs role in
terms of health promotion and disease prevention. Comprehensive,
well-documented guidelines do not exist. School health programs and
services are growing, and the ability of schools to address health issues
is well established. But schools need guidance to develop high quality,
effective programs and services. The existence and acceptance of health
guidelines will leverage additional support for schools.

The AAP and the NASN are seeking input from a wide variety of health and
education professionals, whose expertise and input to the school health
guidelines project is critical. Exhibits and educational sessions will be
held at national meetings of health and education organizations and other
events to 1) alert health professionals, school staff, and community
members to the development of the compendium; 2) solicit input on proposed
topic and subtopic areas; 3) help identify key existing resources in
school health and safety; and 4) provide an opportunity for professionals
at the grass-roots level to volunteer to draft or review portions of the
compendium.

For more information on the project, call the AAP at 847/981-4980 or
e-mail hmhss at aap.org. More information can also be found at the Web site
http://www.schoolhealth.org.

Fourteen expert panels will be established to review existing guidelines and
draft new recommendations that will be circulated widely for review. The
process of guidelines development will begin in early 1999 and may last up to
two years. The process of reviewing the drafts will begin shortly thereafter.
Please review the following list of expert panel areas and check which section
or sections of the compendium you would be most interested in drafting or
reviewing.
